Corfu Travel Guide - Corfu Island's information
A holiday favourite since Victorian times Corfu sits in the Ionian chain of Greek islands that lie off the north-west coast of mainland Greece. Corfu's popularity, especially with the Italian, Brits and Germans has exacted a high price over the years. Corfu island is is the most densely populated Greek island with 140,000 living there.
Corfu is long and narrow - 63km long and 18km wide.. You will find this a most enchanting place, densely covered in Olive groves and cypresses trees, whilst fringed by sandy beaches with shingle coves, complete with Greek tavernas and resturants, hotels, apartments and all tourist facilities. |
The endless sunny weather and enticing Greek climate has resulted in the island of Corfu becoming nothing short of a tourist hotspot. One of the most popular of the islands in the Ionian, the weather in Corfu is quite different to than on mainland Greece. With average temperatures above 20 degrees from May until October, you could say that Corfu’s weather is pretty close to perfect. Long dry summers and short, mild winters with the odd rain shower or two sum up the year-round weather in Corfu. For current weather (upaded every hour) and forecast for up to 10 days you can visit the www.corfu-weather.com. During the summer months you can expect average temperatures to be in the low 30s, while the months of June and September are normally a few degrees lower |
Corfu is perhaps the best known of all the Greek Islands, it is very popular with the Italians, who flock there in their droves in the summer months to soak up the sun on fantastic beaches and to swim in the crystal clear warm sea, and by night enjoying a traditional Greek meal then maybe entertained by local Greek dancers or visiting one of the Islands discotheques or disco bars that have sprung up to cater for the tourist.
The Island’s capital or better known as Corfu Town is well worth visiting. The town itself is made up in two parts Old and New areas of the Town. Old town displays the elegant churches of various religions and the maze of cobbled streets with the old fortress that stands proudly looking over the town. Corfu's port is at the edge of Corfu (Kerkyra) town. Ferries from Greek mainland (Igumenitsa and Patra) offer a regular service as well as ferries from Italy (Venice, Ancona, Brindisi). Corfu port is also a popular stop for visiting cruise ships. |
